Cybersmith Installation

Cybersmith
installation of smart kiosk On 4 September 1997, a Smart Kiosk unit was installed in the Cybersmith Cafe in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. Our current plan is to leave the kiosk in the Harvard Square store through the end of 1997. The first two months of activity are scheduled as a "shakedown" where bugs will be fixed and content will be tailored to the store customers. The remainder of the year will be spent running experiments and testing the usability and utility of the kiosk.

The kiosk hardware and software was provided by the Smart Kiosk project team at Compaq's Cambridge Research Lab. Only a small section of the content on the kiosk was created by the project team, a section describing the research lab and the project intent. The bulk of the content on the kiosk was created by Lauren Bigelow, Director of Product Technology at Cybersmith.

Animation of Nethead Red

The above animated GIF gives a taste of the animated face used as the focal point of communications with the kiosk. This character, "Nethead Red", was created by the Cybersmith staff as the spokesman for their store. In the future we will upgrade this web site to include videos showing the kiosk in full operation.
