Both the photograph by Ross and the 5/5/79 Venice sketch are convincing depictions of reality built up from a mass of detail. But there are other effective means of picture creation that do not rely on masses of detail. The comparison at High Detail also portrays a general impression of a scene. There the 6/23/87 NYC sketch displays upper New York harbor.
The 6/23/87 NYC sketch accomplishes a similar visual objective of conveying the impression of a specific scene. It does this using only rough lines. Those lines generate an impression of shapes, entities, and their relationships.
