INTERDISIPLINARY SOURCES FOR ARTICLES

For interdisciplinary sources of scholarly nature, see Science Citation Index, Current Contents, Web of Science, and Dissertation Abstracts International.

Science Citation Index. 1961- . Philadelphia, Institute for Scientific Information. Quarterly with annual cumulations.

There is no controlled vocabulary for this database.

Three major sections are: Citation Index, Source Index, and Permuterm Index.

To search for cited references, link to WebofScience (ISI network of databases) via Melvyl® or other online library catalogs and retrieval systems. You can find how many of your publications have been cited by other writers and how often. You can also gather references that are cited in papers. This database includes all three Citation Indexes: Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.

Current Contents Philadelphia, Institute for Scientific Information. 1961- . Weekly.

Like SCI, Current Contents is free text based--no controlled vocabulary is used.

Current Contents lists citations from 6,500 scholarly journals; of special importance are the following subfiles:

agri (agriculture, biology, & environmental sciences)

engi (engineering, technology, & applied sciences)

phys (physical, chemical, & earth sciences)

socs (social & behavioral sciences).

Finding current scholarly journal articles in Current Contents

Since materials science is well researched and matured interdisciplinary area worldwide, a good database is CURRENT CONTENTS (CC). It is available on many different online library catalogs and commercial retrieval systems. If you are affiliated with the University of California campuses, you will find it on Melvyl® http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu or via the telnet at telnet://melvyl.ucop.edu.

If you search the Web version, simply type in search words in designated boxes.

Using the telnet protocol, you need to know command language in addition to typing search words.

Switch to Current Contents (CC) and use the EXPlain command to familiarize yourself with the contents of the database. You will see the following on the screen:

               Welcome to the MELVYL CURRENT CONTENTS Article Database

Contents:  10,417,566 citations from over 6500 journals indexed by the Institute for Scientific Information since 07/01/89. Areas covered are:

Social/Behavioral Science
Arts/Humanities
Engineering/Technology/Applied Sciences
Clinical Medicine
Physical/Chemical/Earth Sciences
Life Sciences
Agriculture/Biology/Environmental Sciences

The Current Contents database does not use controlled vocabulary terms. If you aceess the telnet version of Melvyl, you may find it useful to note a script below.

At the CC prompt, instruct the computer to find information about glass. Each instruction has three parts as follows:

COMMAND+INDEX+SEARCH WORDS

EXAMPLE #1: Research on glass (by Prof. Mackenzie at UCLA)

CC-> f tw glass ("find title word" results in:  21.634 citations in the CC article database)

CC-> and f pa mackenzie jd (Action:  "and" these citations with another search: "find personal author"; this narrows down to 13 citations in CC Article database)

CC-> save set

Search request: F SET 1 AND F PA MACKENZIE # (13 citations in CC saved as Set 1)

CC-> f set 1 and lan eng and at ucla  (12 citations are found that match the request)

CC-> d 2-4
