Letters of Recommendation
Credit: Much of the motivation, and content, on this page comes from my friend, and previous CS 180 TA, Prof. Michael Shindler at UC Irvine.
I am happy to serve as a reference for students I have taught or mentored, but due to my hectic schedule I need to set some boundaries up front. This page is primarily about letters of recommendation for graduate programs but applies to other forms of reference as well.
First, some guidelines:
- Students requesting a letter must have taken at least 2 courses with me with an average of 3.6 or higher, or one course with a solid "A", unless we have had significant interactions outside of lecture (e.g. office hours, significant participation on class forums, keeping in touch).
- I will only write letters for students that have committed to attending graduate school and accepting an offer from a program. If graduate school is a backup to a full time job, or you are not sure if you want to go to grad school, please do not request a letter. Each year I spend considerable time writing letters for students that withdraw from the process or decide not to attend graduate school.
- Your earliest deadline must be at least one month after you have submitted all materials to me. I will not respond to requests that are shorter than that.
If this looks good, continue to the next page.
